CE Requirements for RNs:
14 contact hours every year for RNs. Licensure period is November 1 through October 31 of each year. Course: Pediatric Abusive Head Trauma, also known as "Shaken Baby Syndrome." 1.5 hours. This is a one-time CE requirement covering the recognition and prevention of pediatric abusive head trauma. Nurses licensed as of July 15, 2010 have until December 31, 2013 to complete the course. Nurses licensed after that date have three years from the date of licensure to complete the course. Course: Domestic Violence- Nurses seeking reinstatement, licensure by endorsement from another state, and examination candidates educated outside of Kentucky must earn three contact hours of KBN-approved domestic violence CE within three years of licensure into Kentucky. This is a one-time requirement. Course: HIV/AIDs- All nurses are required to earn two contact hours of approved HIV/AIDS CE within the appropriate ten-year period.
RN earning period is 11/01/2002 through 10/31/2012. Course: SANE Sexual Assualt- Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) credentialed nurses are required to earn five contact hours of approved sexual assault CE each licensure period (forensic medicine or domestic violence CE will meet this requirement). Course: APRN Pharmacology- Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are required to earn five contact hours of approved CE in pharmacology each licensure period. These hours count as part of the CE requirement for the period in which they are earned.
CE Requirements for LPNs:
14 contact hours every year for LPNs. Licensure period is November 1 through October 31 of each year. Course: HIV/AIDs- All nurses are required to earn two contact hours of approved HIV/AIDS CE within the appropriate ten-year period. LPNs are in their second ten-year period of 11/01/2011 through 10/31/2021. Regulation: IV Therapy-Kentucky Administrative Regulation, 201 KAR 20:490, governing LPN intravenous (IV) therapy scope of practice. This regulation expands the scope of LPN practice in the area of intravenous therapy practice. The regulation identifies IV therapy functions that are recognized as being within the current scope of LPN practice, as well as identifies functions that will be an expansion of that practice. An LPN who has met the education and training requirements may perform select functions except as limited and under supervision as stated in the regulation.
