The purpose of the presentation is to address the differences between a research-focused doctorate, the PhD, and a practice-focused doctorate, the DNP, factors for nurses to consider in deciding whether to pursue a PhD or DNP Degree, and ways in which PhDs and DNPs can collaborate and work together within the discipline of nursing. Upon completion, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss the purpose of the PhD degree and the DNP degree.
  • List one difference and one similarity between the PhD degree and the DNP degree.
  • Describe at least two factors for nurses to consider in deciding whether to pursue a PhD or DNP degree.
  • Explain ways in which PhD nurses and DNP nurses can work together to foster collaboration within the discipline of nursing.
