Objectives:
The goal of this continuing education module is to describe the characteristics of women incarcerated in U.S. correctional facilities, their complex medical and mental health needs, social and family considerations, and the challenges and opportunities for nurses, physical therapists and social workers caring for female inmates. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • List factors that are more prevalent in incarcerated women than incarcerated men or women in the general population
  • Outline important health needs of incarcerated women
  • Describe challenges and opportunities for healthcare professionals providing care to incarcerated women
