Objectives:
The purpose of this joint replacement CE module is to provide healthcare professionals, specifically nurses, emergency medical professionals/paramedics, occupational therapists and physical therapists, with information about caring for people with total hip and total knee joint replacement surgeries, including patient teaching aimed at preventing complications and improving outcomes. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Name interventions healthcare professionals as a team can use to prevent complications after joint replacement surgery
  • Describe two strategies to help patients and families cope with self-care deficits and the transition from hospital to home after a total joint replacement
  • Discuss the impact of managed care on preventing complications and supervising care for people who have had joint replacement surgery
