The goal of this cholesterol management module is to inform nurses about the medications used to treat patients with hyperlipidemia who are at significant risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Name five categories of medications that reduce lipids and name the main lipid targeted in each category
  • State the most common adverse effects of the most widely used cholesterol-lowering medications, known as statins
  • Identify the potential risk reduction in treating hyperlipidemia

Nov. 12, 2013: The American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) released new clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of blood cholesterol in people at high risk for cardiovascular diseases caused by atherosclerosis.
