The goal of this gastric tonometry continuing education program is to enhance nurses’ understanding of monitoring tissue perfusion through the use of gastric tonometry. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Define the role of the gut as a monitor for early, accurate warning of tissue hypoperfusion
  • Identify traditional methods used to monitor tissue perfusion
  • Describe physiological underpinnings of gastric tonometry and its technical limitations related to accuracy of measurements
