Objectives:
The goal of this continuing education program is to help nurses and social workers identify and care for patients who are heroin users. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe three behaviors exhibited by patients who experience physical and psychological dependence on heroin
  • List signs and symptoms manifested by patients with heroin overdose and with heroin withdrawal
  • Identify the recommended treatment for heroin overdose
  • Identify two treatment modalities each for heroin dependency and withdrawal
  • Describe the challenges of recovery and the options to enhance long-term success
