The goal of this cholesterol management continuing education module is to inform nurses about the medications used to treat patients with dyslipidemia who are at significant risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Name five categories of medications that treat lipids and name the main lipid targeted in each category
  • State the most common adverse effects of the most widely used cholesterol-lowering medications, known as statins
  • Identify the potential risk reduction in treating hyperlipidemia
