Objectives:
The goal of this continuing education module is to provide nurses with information about best practices in the prescribing of controlled substances, including safe and effective prescribing, administration and dispensing of controlled substances to the patient with chronic pain. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Review the regulatory factors associated with best practice prescribing of controlled substances
  • Identify information related to the West Virginia Controlled Substances Monitoring Program
  • Describe components of patient evaluation and education necessary for a treatment plan that incorporates functional goals, addiction risk, and safety when controlled substances are prescribed
  • Discuss informed consent and treatment agreements
  • Explain the epidemiology of chronic pain
  • Discuss the indications of opioids and other key elements in the safe and effective management of chronic pain
  • Discuss the problem of drug addiction as it relates to chronic pain, including the prevalence, signs and symptoms
