The purpose of this course is to provide healthcare providers with the most recent information about severe and persistent mental illnesses, particularly the biological aspects. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss the public health and social impact of severe and persistent mental illnesses
  • Describe positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia and treatment guidelines
  • Identify symptoms, treatment and comorbidity concerns with major depression
  • Explain diagnostic categories and biochemical considerations with bipolar illness
  • Describe various anxiety disorders and appropriate nursing approaches for different levels of anxiety
  • Discuss how nurses can have an impact on policy and education issues to improve mental healthcare
Effective 8/1/2014, the Florida Board of Nursing will not accept contact hours offered in tenth hour increments (example: 1.6 contact hours). Course contact hours will be rounded down to the nearest half hour (example: 1.6 contact hours becomes 1.5 contact hours, 1.4 contact hours becomes 1.0 contact hours). This course will be reported to CE Broker for FL RNs, LPNs, ARNPs, and CNSs as 5.5 hours.
