Objectives:
This course has been approved for 4 hours by the Commission on Case Manager Certification for 2014.
 
The goal of this continuing education module is to increase nurses’ knowledge about the most commonly prescribed medications used to treat hypertension and improve cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health and to improve understanding of nursing implications associated with these medications. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify three elements of optimal cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health
  • Describe how thiazide and thiazide-like diuretics work to lower blood pressure
  • Identify the most common side effects of thiazide and thiazide-like diuretics
  • Explain how angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor therapy works to lower blood pressure
  • List three systemic responses that occur with ACE inhibitors
  • Identify the most common side effects of ACE inhibitors
  • Explain how angiotensin II receptor blockers work to lower blood pressure
  • List the main effects of bradykinin on blood pressure 
  • Describe the medication therapies using fixed-dose preparations that combine drugs to manage hypertension and patient outcomes
  • Identify the three subclasses of calcium channel blockers
  • Discuss the primary mechanism of action for each subclass of calcium channel blockers
  • List three clinical indications for the use of calcium channel blockers
  • Differentiate between the actions of beta 1 and beta 2 blockers
  • List three clinical indications for the use of beta-blockers
  • Explain the use of different beta-blockers based on patient need and characteristics
  • Describe at least three nursing implications for each — thiazide and thiazide-like diuretics, ACE inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers and beta-blockers
  • Identify at least three points for patient and family education for each type of medication presented
 
Effective 8/1/2014, the Florida Board of Nursing will not accept contact hours offered in tenth hour increments (example: 1.6 contact hours). Course contact hours will be rounded down to the nearest half hour (example: 1.6 contact hours becomes 1.5 contact hours, 1.4 contact hours becomes 1.0 contact hours). This course will be reported to CE Broker for FL RNs, LPNs, ARNPs, and CNSs as 2.5 hours.
