Objectives:
The goal of this stroke scale program is to provide nurses with information about the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale for evaluation of neurological status in adult patients with acute ischemic stroke. After studying the information presented here, you will able to —
  • State how to perform a neurological assessment using the NIHSS.
  • Describe the stroke scales' validity in predicting lesion size and stroke severity.
  • Discuss the NIHSS as a predictor of outcomes in patients with stroke.
