Objectives:
The goal of this program is to provide nurses with an overview of myelodysplastic syndromes including treatment and nursing care. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Identify three carcinogens related to increased risk for MDS
  • List the two classification systems for MDS
  • Discuss survival and mortality related to transformation to acute myeloid leukemia
  • Describe how treatment is related to estimates of prognosis and performance status
  • Discuss at least three broad nursing care interventions
  • List three safety measures to include in patient education about treatment and cytopenias
