The purpose of this advance directive continuing education program is to provide nurses, dietitians, paramedics and EMTs, health educators, physical therapists, physicians, radiologic technologists and respiratory therapists with information about the status of advance directive implementation and to suggest strategies they can use to help patients participate in the advance directive process. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Explain the goals of the Patient Self-Determination Act
- Describe barriers that patients, families and healthcare professionals have in implementing advance directives
- Discuss actions that healthcare practitioners as a team can take to promote patient self-determination with advance care planning
