The goal of this continuing education program is to provide information to nurses about the management of chronic disease for patients in correctional settings. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
- Describe the nature and extent of chronic disease in the inmate patient population
- Outline the nurse’s role in the management of chronic illness in the correctional setting, including identification, treatment planning, patient education and discharge planning
- List major health issues relevant to inmates in correctional settings, such as arthritis, asthma, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension and HIV infection
