Objectives:
The goal of this program is to provide nurses with an overview of fetal cardiac development, the transition of cardiopulmonary circulation that occurs in a neonate post-birth, early presenting congenital heart defects and the nursing care required for these neonates and their families. After studying the information here, you will be able to —
  • Describe normal fetal cardiac development and the transition of cardiopulmonary circulation that occurs postbirth.
  • Describe three congenital cardiac defects that present in the newborn period.
  • Identify nursing interventions in the care of a neonate with congenital heart disease.
