Objectives:
The purpose of this program is to inform nurses about the nature of sleep and insomnia and the effects of insomnia on people across the life span. The nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic treatment of insomnia will be covered as well as the nursing implications for this widespread problem. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to —
  • Discuss the scope of insomnia in the United States.
  • Identify the sleep needs of infants, children, adolescents, adults and seniors.
  • List three behavioral therapies and three classes of medications to treat insomnia.
