The goal of this module is to educate nurses about how Department of Health Services nurses work with other team members in American Red Cross shelters to prevent injury and illness and to promote health in the aftermath of a major disaster. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to —
  • Describe the legal mandate the American Red Cross has to operate mass care shelters.
  • Explain the scope of practice for nurses who work in American Red Cross shelters.
  • Discuss the professional and personal characteristics most likely to lead to a rewarding experience caring for clients in a shelter.
