Objectives:
The purpose of this program is to inform nurses about Clostridium difficile infections in hospitals and long-term care facilities and to offer strategies for reducing the spread of this pathogen. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to —
  • Give three reasons why it is difficult to control transmission of C. difficile in hospitals and long-term care facilities.
  • Explain at least four ways the patient-to-patient spread of C. difficile can be prevented.
  • Discuss the two major risk factors for infections with C. difficile.
