Objectives:

The goal of this program is to inform nurses about the global risk assessment for cardiovascular disease (CVD) associated with lipid profile values and the therapeutic lifestyle changes recommended to reduce risk. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —

  • Name three key factors in global risk assessment for cardiovascular disease risk as defined by the 2001 Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines, with additional recommendations based on subsequent randomized clinical trials.
  • Explain the subtypes of lipids, including low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), and triglycerides.
  • Identify three elements of therapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC).
