Objectives:

The goal of this program is to improve nurses’ ability to assess and meet the sociocultural needs of childbearing families of diverse cultural and social groups. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —

  • Discuss the relationship of culture, subculture, acculturation, assimilation, ethnocentrism, and cultural relativism to nursing practice.
  • Recognize a variety of ethnic and cultural beliefs and practices related to childbearing and family.
  • Identify needs unique to culturally diverse families who adhere to their traditional beliefs and practices regarding childbearing.
