Objectives:
The goal of this continuing education module is to update nurses’ clinical knowledge about the collection, uses and advantages of umbilical cord blood stem cells. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the three types of blood cells and immune factors that arise from stem cells
  • Compare the procedures for collection of bone marrow and umbilical cord blood and donating cord blood
  • List three advantages of umbilical cord blood stem cells over bone marrow stem cells and the pros and cons of private storage of cord blood
