Objectives:
The goal of this program is to enhance nurses’ ability to administer thrombolytic agents and care for patients who have had an ischemic brain attack. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Explain how thrombolytic agents work.
  • List the inclusion and exclusion criteria for administration of alteplase (tissue plasminogen activator, recombinant; rt-PA [Activase]).
  • Explain the nursing care of a patient receiving intravenous (IV) rt-PA or other treatment options following an ischemic stroke.
