Objectives:
The goal of this program is to provide nurses with current information on co-occurring mental and substance use disorders to effectively care for this often misunderstood patient population. After you study the information presented here, you will be able to —
  • Define co-occurring disorders and identify at least three examples of co-occurring mental and substance use disorders.
  • Identify four principles of medication management in patients with co-occurring disorders.
  • Describe the role of nursing in clinical management of patients and the importance of the therapeutic relationship in the treatment of co-occurring disorders.
