Objectives:

The goal of this program is to familiarize nurses with the risks, benefits, and therapeutic ramifications of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, or ERCP, as it relates to abnormalities of the biliary system. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to —

  • Describe the role of ERCP in the diagnosis of diseases of the biliary tree.
  • Discuss the indications and contraindications of ERCP.
  • Identify abnormal procedure results and their ramifications for treatment.
